Pictures of Scabies: What is Scabies?

Scabies is a condition that can affect anyone, no matter what their economic level, race, or nationality.  It is caused by a microscopic skin mite known as Sarcoptes scabei.  This little pest burrows beneath the skin, creating intense itching.  It can spread rapidly throughout the same household.

This bug will hitch a ride in bedding, towels, and clothing.  It’s also spread through skin to skin contact.  It’s especially prevalent in crowded conditions such as nursing homes, child care centers, and hospitals.

Some people consider scabies to be an STD.  It is not.  While you can catch it through sexual contact, there are many other ways to be infested as well.  However, it is common for the mite to thrive in private areas and folds of your body, such as the genitals and under the arms.
